This week is FASHION REVOLUTION, and maybe you're wondering what it is.
It's a movement started after the 24th of April 2013, in Bangladesh, when the Rana Plaza building collapsed, and 1138 people died and 2500 were injured, making this the fourth largest industrial disaster in history. Building associated with brands like Mango and Primark.
Questa settimana è la FASHION REVOLUTION, e forse vi starete chiedendo cos'è.
E' un movimento iniziato dopo il 24 Aprile 2013, quando in Bangladesh il Rana Plaza, un complesso produttivo, è crollato e 1138 persone sono morte e altre 2500 sono rimaste ferite. Questo è il quarto incidente più grande della storia industrale. Il Rana Plaza era uno stabilimento associato a brand come Mango e Primark.
During this week (and also during the rest of the year, but during this week even more) people use their voices to ask brands to change things, and some things started to. More brands are open about where their clothes are made, more manufacturers are making their factories safer and more producers are being seen and heard.
Durante questa settimana (ma anche durante il resto dell'anno) la gente usa la propria voce per far sì che i brand cambino le cose, ed alcune cose sono cambiate.
Alcuni brand stanno mettendo in chiaro dove vengono prodotti i loro vestiti, più fabbricanti stanno rendendo le loro fabbriche più sicure e più produttori vengono ascoltati.
I've never been that much into fashion. I usually liked the stuff I saw on my friends or were IN at the moment. I've always hated shopping.
When I could buy my own clothes, I usually went more towards H&M and stuff like that, because they're cheap and so easy to get. I used to work close to an H&M store, and sometimes my sister and I would make an online order together because "it's easier and if something didn't fit or we didn't like it person the returns was like 3€." Not true, the cost is much higher.
Non sono mai stata un'appassionata di moda. Di solito mi piacevano delle cose che magari vedevo addosso alle mie amiche o che erano IN al momento. Ho sempre odiato fare shopping.
Quando ho iniziato a permettermi di acquistare i miei abiti, di solito andavo da H&M o posti simili, perchè le cose costano poco e sono facilmente reperibili. Lavoravo vicino ad un negozio H&M e spesso io e mia sorella facevamo ordini online, perchè "è più facile provare le cose a casa, e se non ci piacevano o non ci stavano le rimandavamo indietro, tanto il reso costa solo 3€. " Non è vero, il costo è molto più alto.
In the past year or so I've started to be more conscious. Yes, I still slipped and got a cardigan from Heidi Klum's line for LIDL and a mustard one from KIABI, but then the only other clothes I got in the last months are three pair of proper trousers, because I only had jeans, and they're all made in Italy and ethically.
I've tried to buy second hand but the few times I went to the second-hand shop closest to me I didn't find anything I would like, but I'm not giving up and I hope to find something soon.
Plus, as you've read in one of my latest posts, I donated some clothes to ARMADIO VERDE, and I want to get something from this shop. Go give it a look.
In quest'anno ho cercato di essere un pò più cosciente di queste cose. Sono scivoltata solo due volte, quando ho comprato un cardigan della linea per LIDL di Heidi Klum e uno color senape da KIABI, ma gli unici altri vestiti che ho acquistato sono tre paia di pantaloni, perchè avevo solo jeans, e sono fatti in Italia e in modo etico.
Ho provato ad acquistare di seconda mano, ma quelle volte che sono andata nel negozio dell'usato più vicino a me non ho trovato nulla che mi piacesse, ma non mi arrendo e spero di trovare qualcosa presto.
In più, se avete letto il mio ultimo post, ho donato alcuni vestiti a ARMADIO VERDE, e spero di trovare qualcosa di carino presto anche da loro. Andate a dare un'occhiata anche voi.
Also, I'd really love to buy from all these amazing ethical and with amazing materials brands, but that stuff is pretty expensive for me right now. Still, I found during the last year or so, many girls on Instagram who make beautiful clothes, and yes, they're expensive and out of reach, too, for me, but I hope someday to be able to get something from them. In più, mi piacerebbe moltissimo comprare da negozi etici e che lavorano con stupendi materiali, ma spesso sono articoli un pò cari per me al momento. I used to buy that t-shirt because "it's cute and cheap and if it doesn't last for next year, what's the problem, I'll throw it away and buy a new one." That's what my mom used to tell me when we bought clothes together when I was younger and stopped growing. I stopped thinking that if I liked that I could buy it. I'm not Ariana Grande.
In the past years, thanks to the internet and the people I follow on Instagram and/or Youtube I've been more conscious, and start thinking more. I want to eventually get to make all my clothes, and maybe accessories, so that the only money I'll spend will be on materials and I'll know who made my clothes.
Di solito compravo quella maglietta perchè "è carina e costa poco e se non dura fino all'anno prossimo non importa, la butterò per comprarne una nuova". Questo è quello che mi ripeteva spesso mia mamma quando andavamo a fare shopping insieme quando ero più piccola e ho smesso di crescere. Ho smesso di pensare che se mi piace me lo prendo. Negli ultimi anni, grazie a internet e alle persone che seguo su Instagram e/o Youtube ho iniato a pensare un pò di più. Vorrei ad un certo punto riuscire a farmi i miei vestiti in modo da spendere solo i soldi in materiale e in modo da sapere da chi vengono fatti.
Anyway, Fashion Revolution is mostly about ethical manufacture, about how the people who made my clothes are treated and paid.
Yesterday I was listening to the latest podcast episode of TALKING TASTEBUDS with Venetia Falconer and her guest was Livia Firth, who founded Eco Age, a website that guides people toward ethical choices, about fashion too. She talked about when she went to visit one of these factories and talked to the women who worked there and some of them even told her that they were allowed bathroom breaks twice a day.
One of the of Eco Age supporters is Emma Watson, who has always been careful about what she wears, on and off the job. She worked with the costume designer on Beauty and the Beast and she created an IG account, The Press Tour, where she shows all her outfits for all her outings.
Ad ogni modo, la Fashion Revolution chiede alle aziende di rendere le loro fabbriche e i loro metodi lavorativi più etici, trattare meglio e pagare il giusto i loro lavoratori.

Let's think a bit more when we go out shopping. I just can't watch anymore the video hauls or the stories on IG where influencers buy all these useless clothes, just to stuff even more their wardrobes. I just wish more of them would approach stuff made with more care, for the people who make them, for the environment, for themselves.
Just think a bit more: do you really "need" that skirt you've seen in the ads? Will you be naked without it? Can you use the stuff you have in your wardrobe first?

Pensiamo un pochino quando andiamo a fare shopping. Non riesco neanche più a guardare video haul o le stories dove le influencers fanno vedere tutte le cose inutili che comprano in continuazione, solo roba da aggiungere al loro guardaroba. Vorrei solo che si approcciassero al mondo dello shopping con un pò più di cura, per le persone che fanno quei vestiti, per l'ambiente e per loro stesse.
Pensate un pochino: mi "serve" davvero quella gonna che ho visto nella pubblicità? Se non la comprassi rimarresti nuda? Non puoi usare i vestiti nel tuo armadio prima?
